A great resume and cover letter paired with experience aren’t always enough to get you an interview or an offer. Many applicants are facing heavy competition for desired roles and need to set themselves apart from the mix.
Show Them the Value You Will Bring To the Company
It’s relatively simple to know what you desire in your next job such as, salary, title, culture, etc. However, in order to stand out in the applicant pool, you have to meet the company’s needs. Start to think about how you will add value to the company and help achieve their goals. Do your research and hear what they have to say about the job from the phone screen to the sit-down interview. This will allow you to share your experiences and tailor your anecdotes without the pressure of trying too hard.
Ask the Proper Questions at the Right Time
Timing is everything and you don’t want to be asking about pay and benefits when you are now at that stage. If the employer brings it up during the interview, that is one thing but don’t make your questions be about “what’s in it for me?” Employers are more interested in candidates that are asking about company values, initiatives, performance feedback mechanism and characteristics of high-performers in the role.
Prepare A SWOT Analysis on Yourself
Break down your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats to highlight your value to an employer. This is a great exercise to do with yourself throughout your career as it will be your confidence in your abilities and uncover areas of improvement that you have pushed to the side in busier times. When it is time for an interview, you should know yourself well and be able to navigate around trickier questions with ease.
Create Your Personalized Content Strategy
Strategic content that you are posting on LinkedIn and other social media platforms will generate new conversations and serve as proof of your expertise. This includes original content, sharing articles from other sources and commenting on other’s content. It also shows your interest level if you are staying connecting with what is happening in the industry.
Use a Professional Tagline
More than likely you have the same job title has hundreds of other people applying for the same position as you are. Find something special about what you do or how you do your work that demonstrates who you are and what you bring to the table. This should be included across all resources in which you present yourself professionally, such as online and in-person, think of this as an even shorter elevator pitch for yourself. It will give you a lasting impression with potential employers.
Show That You Are Qualified
Have colleagues, former managers, and clients offer proof of your qualifications by writing LinkedIn testimonials. Once it is submitted and published, you can leave it on your profile for as long as you want and this is a great alternative to repeatedly asking someone to write a letter of recommendation. Use your resume and social profiles to list achievements. You are showing that you can do it, not just saying it.
The Things That Never Go Out Of Style
Dressing for success and confidence. You want to ensure you are making the best first impression and that includes dressing professionally and being well-groomed. The confidence should come naturally because when you look good, you feel good.
Manners never go out of style either. Writing a handwritten note sends the message that you thought enough to take time to write a personal thank you as opposed to sending an email in our technology-driven world. Still, send the email but send the handwritten one as well with different messaging.
