How to Tactfully Negotiate a Job Offer

Congratulations! You’ve received a job offer. This could be a job you are excited for and ready to accept but there may be something with the offer that makes you hesitate. It’s not uncommon to have these feelings especially if this is a coveted position or one that is better than your current situation.
There are ways to negotiate a counteroffer without rocking the boat and remaining appreciative and respectful.
- Thank them for the offer and indicate your excitement for the opportunity.
- Be friendly and continually reaffirm interest.
- Know your worth and know the market. When it comes to salary, reference salary.com to see the average salary for your position and location. Some job experts will tell you to always ask for more money because they believe employers typically offer below what they are willing to go. Use your best judgement based on your knowledge, experience and be prepared if they don’t accept.
- Present a package of options. This gives the employer an opportunity to meet some of your needs if not all. i.e. – They might not be able to meet on salary but can accommodate an annual bonus or more paid-time off. It is nearly standard currently for physical therapists, occupational therapists and other allied health careers to be offered a sign-on bonus.
- Support your counter with reference to your experience so you are reminding them of your value.
- Negotiate through email. This gives both parties time to think the options over and doesn’t put either on the spot.
- Always send your counteroffer to the person whose signature is on the original offer. That is an indicator that they may be the final decision maker in the process.

Good Afternoon, Mr. Smith,
Thank you very much for the offer. I am extremely excited for the opportunity to work at ABC Company. The position and areas of responsibility are a perfect fit with both my skills and career goals. I am confident that this would provide me with the opportunity to make a significant contribution to the company’s growth.
In terms of the offer, I’m hoping we can find a way to create a package that is more in line with my skills and experience, and that will work for everyone. I would welcome an offer that contained the following amendments:
- Base Salary: $65,000
- Signing Bonus: $5,000
- Two additional days of paid-time off
